Adventure Rating: 2/4 Strenuous Level
Flat water, remote camping
Overview
This 2 day overnight trip is the easier of our two trips on the upper Burnett. The section is above Gayndah and finishes at the weir, expect flat water paddling, wide river banks and remote camping.
You could see lungfish, platypus, black swans and more.
This is a remote adventure, you will be bush camping with no facilities. The remoteness of this area means you are unlikely to see another person for two days. Our campsite options are all secluded and spectacular.

The Route
(starting at the green arrow and finishing at the red square). This is a downstream one way trip. Starting upstream of Gayndah in the upper reaches of the Burnett River. Total distance is 13.69km over two days. Time on water is approximately 5 hours per day. This way seem like a slow rate of travel but this allows for time to navigate obstacles, walk shallow sections, in case of headwinds, time to stop for lunch etc.
Meeting/starting point for the Journey
Meet at the bridge of Humphreys Road and Robins Road, on the north side of the River.
FAQs
Can you take private groups?
Yes if you have a group of friends, I can take a private group – minimum of 4 required.
How do I get back to my car at the start point?
The guide will leave their car at the end and give everyone a lift back to their car.
What is the fitness requirement?
Moderate fitness is required. You need to be able to carry one end of an empty canoe for a short distance across uneven ground. The distance itself to paddle is pretty cruisy, the energetic bit is – depending upon water levels – the couple of shallow bits where you may have to get out and drag/carry your kayak or run small rapids. You will be walking through and across shallow water and rough rocky ground for a short while so depending upon your balance, strength and ankles you may have to be careful at those points. But because we are not rushing you can take your time.
I think the distance we do is perfect – they are a few shallow and windy bits which slows us down and it also allows us to make camp early and relax, soak it all up before cooking tea and going to bed.
Are we carrying our stuff on the SUP/Canoe/Kayak also, what happens if it gets wet, and what happens if we get wet?
Yes you will be carrying all your equipment. Your stuff will be packed in dry bags so it won’t get wet if you do capsize, which is unlikely anyway.
If you fall in you will get wet – so wear your bathers and sun protection ie long shirt and possible pants over the top. It is warm in Queensland during the day so you’ll dry quickly and shouldn’t get to cold if you do fall in (which is unlikely anyway our kayaks are stable.) You then bring a spare clothes to change into dry clothes when we get to camp.
Why do you call them “expeditions” and not “tours” – what’s the difference?
These are more adventurous than a tour. You will be carrying/dragging canoes, camping with no facilities, and will need to work as part of a team to make the the groups gets their kayaks across the shallow bits and pitch in to carry all the gear, prepare meals etc.

Reviews
“I was really surprised how good the Burnett is to paddle! I’ve paddled the Noosa everglades many times as it’s close to home, and its way more well known, yet I think the Burnett is heaps better. The scenery is more varied, the camp spots are better here, and the river itself is much more fun to paddle – it’s a one way trip, its more narrow and windy between trees and through rock gardens, so much fun! Highly recommended!”
